On the 8 mile run on Sunday, I didn't look at my watch. I thought I was running 10+ minute miles, but it turns out I was running faster than I thought, like at the Jingle Bell Half. Maybe there is a lesson here.

Jingle Bell Half Marathon

Since the Oceanview Half Marathon went well, I decided to get one more half in this year - the Jingle Bell Half in Haverhill, MA on Sunday.

This race has been run for years out of Atkinson NH but this year they moved it to Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. This is a great venue for the race. They have the use of the gym so it's not necessary to wait outside for the race start, and ample parking right by the gym and the start. My car was parked about 10 meters from the start line.

A good thing too as it was 10 degrees at race start. Fortunately there was no wind and the skies were clear so it was actually a beautiful day for a race. I sat in the car with the heat going until about 2 minutes before the start, then jumped out and into the pack lining up for the start. (I did do a 1/2 mile warmup and stretch a half hour before the start).

The first couple miles didn't feel particularly great, and I wasn't all that fast either with an 8:40 and 8:21. My legs felt a little strange, a little numb, because of the temperature (I was wearing black tights) so I concluded this wasn't going to be a fast day and I ignored my watch the rest of the way. Instead I just let my body dictate the pace.

The course wasn't too bad, but was hardly a fast course. It was rolling the whole way with very few sections that were actually flat. There were a couple of pretty decent climbs as well. 392 feet of elevation gain overall. It's a pretty course through the northern Massachusetts countryside with a fresh blanket of snow. I saw plenty of horses and goats, even a few llamas.

Based on how I felt I expected to run maybe a 1:52 or 1:53. I was shocked to see 1:48:xx when I turned back into the Community College and saw the timer at the finish line. I was going to beat my time at the Oceanview Half by more than a minute!

Post-race, they had the usual fruit at the finish line, and several different soups available in the gym. This was a nice little race and I might do it again.

Wild Turkey 5 mile run 2019

I ran the Wild Turkey 5 miler in Salem on Thanksgiving morning, an annual tradition. The weather was rainy, but fortunately not too cold - in the mid to high 40's. My legs were all there and I ran well, averaging a 7:48 pace. If I 'd known I was that close to breaking 39 minutes, I wouldn't have allowed myself to be caught in the crowd at the start and lose some time!

Ocean View Half Marathon

I ran the Ocean View Half Marathon in Ipswich on Sunday. Not so much as a race but as an experiment. I haven't run a half marathon since the Star Wars half in the Spring of 2018, which was an exercise in pain because of the arthritis in my knee and hip. For a time after that I wondered if it would be necessary to give up running altogether. Since then I've been experimenting with cross-training, running styles, distances and running surfaces to see if there is a way I could manage to continue running. Through most of 2018 and the early part of this year, I found I could run and race short distances, but never without some pain. 10k's or the Tapleyville 7 miler I would finish with aching joints and maybe a limp. In fact, after finishing the Pot O' Gold 4 miler this Spring in a lot of pain I reconciled myself (I thought) to retiring from running.

But as might have been expected, after substituting cross-training for running and some time away from the road, my joints felt fine again and I couldn't resist trying running a few miles. The old saw is that runners don't stop running until they simply can't anymore.

I went back to experimenting, and discovered that the key factor that caused the pain was mileage per week. As long as I kept the total miles per week somewhere under 15, I could run with only minor pain or no pain. Even better, it was the cumulative miles that mattered, not the length of any individual run. So I could run an 8 miler as long as I didn't run more than 7 miles the rest of the week.

Over a few months I slowly increased the weekly mileage, to the point that I have now been running between 15 and 20 miles per week, along with a lot of time on the elliptical. The thought occurred to me that I might be able to run a half marathon - an idea that had seemed permanently beyond me for the last year and a half. Well, if total mileage is what matters, why not 13.1 miles when I am managing 18 miles/week?

Thus the Ocean View Half Marathon.

It was an experiment because I haven't run more than 10 miles in any training run. When I used to run half marathons, I would regularly run 15+ mile runs and 40 miles/week. So there wasn't just the question of whether my joints would hold up, but how I would handle the half marathon distance. Does an hour on the elliptical followed by an 8 mile run really prepare one for a half marathon?

Happily, I discovered that my joints held up well and I finished the race without any significant joint pain. I also held up from an endurance standpoint, running my fastest the last 5k of the race. And that after some very serious hills in miles 8 and 9. So some moderate distance runs combined with the elliptical can be adequate preparation for a half.  There will likely be more half marathons in my future. The old bones still have some miles in them.

It was a beautiful day for a race. In the 40's, sunny and very moderate wind. All in all things could not have gone much better than they did.

Devil's Chase 6.66 Miler 2019

I ran the Devil's Chase race in Salem this morning. It's an odd distance - 6.66 miles in honor of the Prince of Darkness. The weather was good, about 50 degrees, little wind and most importantly, no rain. I managed to run it more than 2 minutes faster than I did last year. In fact, my time this year is a PR for this course (but then I've only run it 3 times). My goal was to average a sub-8 minute mile pace, which I didn't quite get (8:03 pace in the event), but I'm satisfied with the result. I ran it about the pace I did the Mystic Classic 10k this summer, and the Devil's Chase course is a bit more difficult than the Mystic Classic course.

I had a breakthrough on the D5, running a 22:54  and taking more than a minute off my recent times. In fact, looking back through my results, it's the fastest D5K I've run in several years. Admittedly the course - which was never quite 5k - is even a bit shorter since the "hangout place" was moved from Osborne Tavern to Panini Pizza early this year. Now the course is just short of 3 miles. Nevertheless a 22:54 is right around the time I was running the D5K while training for the Wineglass Marathon in 2017, when I was running my fastest and before the arthritis problems kicked in. It feels good to know I can still run as fast as I ever did, given that at times during the last two years I doubted whether I'd be able to continue running at all.

I attribute the progress to the elliptical training. I've never dogged it on the elliptical, but the last few weeks I've changed my approach. My workout plan is the "hill program", where the elliptical simulates going up a hill for 5 minutes then down for 5 minutes. So that is six up/down hills in an hour. My old approach was to work harder on the uphills then take it easy on the downhills. I'm still doing that but now in the 2 minutes at the top of the hill I go all out for maximum intensity, leaning into the machine, getting on my toes, and working both my arms and legs as hard as I can. That's the only difference, but it apparently has made a huge difference in my running speed.

Typically I might be able to get one of the D5K miles under 8 minutes, but last week I did all 3 under 8 minutes and put in a 7:24 last mile, by far the fastest mile I've run in a long time.

Mystic Classic 10k

I ran the Mystic Classic 10k in Wakefield, around the lake. It's a decent course, nice and flat, and the weather was good - cloudy in the low 60's. The only drawback to the course is that it is run in the road rather on the sidewalk, and it's an open course, so on a few sections there is considerable traffic to contend with.

But I ran well, better than my last 10k, and just managed to reach my goal of a sub-50 with an official time of 49:57.  In the 6th mile I ran my fastest mile in a long time - a 7:48. My joints held up as well with only slight soreness at the end. The splits below:

Bridge & Back 10k

I ran the Bridge & Back 10k in Salem this morning. This is always a hot race and today was no exception. Up and over the bridge is a trial as there is no cover at all and one bakes on the concrete.

But I was happy with my performance. As usual, I finished just out of the age group awards:

Also as usual, I negative split the race. The joints mostly cooperated, although both my knee and hip were a bit sore at the end. Nothing bad, however.

I generally don't take good race pictures, but hey.... it's a picture

I was happy I was able to do a couple of sub 8 minute miles during the D5K. I haven't run this race for the last several weeks and, given I've only been running about 13 miles/week, it shows all the elliptical work is a pretty good substitute for road running. Which is good, because the joints allow me unlimited time on the elliptical.

Tapleyville 7 Miler

I've had a chest cold all week and haven't done a lot of training. Nonetheless, I decided to give the Tapleyville race a go since I had already registered for it. It went a little better than I expected given the cold, which definitely had an effect on my breathing. In even better news, my joints felt fine throughout the race, no pain or stiffness at all. So the conclusion seems to be to do the bulk of my training on the elliptical and restrict the running to not a lot more than 12-15 miles/week.

I ran the 5K faster than I have in a long time (maybe a year and a half), and really cranked down on the last mile, running a mile in the low 7's. My knee stayed good through the entire 9 miles I ran that night.

I've been training either on the turf field at the high school or on the treadmill at Planet Fitness. The exception is Wednesday nights, when I run the D5K and add additional road miles. Given how well my knee has been feeling, I went for extra distance Saturday on the treadmill, which I finished but unfortunately my knee gave me some pain the last few miles.

Things have slowly been getting better as I continue to train and to lose weight. I'm not recording my weight or even weighing myself, as I've come to learn it just demotivates me. Based on how my body looks and my pants fit, I know I've been losing weight however. Every pound lost takes pressure off my knee, and given where I was at this time last year (not able to run even a couple of miles on the road because of pain in both my knee and my hip), I've come a long way. I can now run a 5K without the knee troubling me and as fast as I was a couple years ago. I'm pretty sure I can crank out a 10K as well based on my ability to run up to 9 miles on the road Wednesday nights without significant knee pain. The elusive half marathon is not out of the question if I continue to lose weight.

Wicked Frosty Four and Hangover Classic 10k

Yesterday I ran both the Wicked Frosty Four in Salem at 10:00 AM and the Hangover Classic 10K in Salisbury at 11:30. For some reason, I thought the Frosty Four was at 8:30 when I signed up. If I had known it was at 10 I wouldn't have signed up for both, as Salisbury is about a 40 minute drive from Salem.

My idea was to run both as an experiment to see how my knee held up. I've been able to run a 10K on the road fairly comfortably. How would I do with a four miler, some rest and then a 10K?

I arrived at the Frosty Four very early and got an ideal parking spot so I could finish the race, jump in my car and head off to the Hangover Classic with no delay. That's exactly what I did. I was in my car and driving less than 3 minutes after finishing the Frosty Four and made it to Salisbury at 11:20.

Both races went well. The weather at both was as good as one can expect at this time of year, close to 50 degrees. Both races featured some heavy wind at times, an inevitability when running along the coast.

I didn't run as hard as I could at the Frosty Four but instead kept a good, steady pace.

Wicked Frosty Four:

Frosty Four Finish

My knee started to bother me about the 3 mile mark of the Hangover Classic and I began to wonder if running both races was a mistake. At the turnaround (it is an out and back course) I took it up a notch and the knee started to feel better. It seems to feel better the faster I run. I wonder if that is because of adrenaline kicking in.

My fastest miles of the day were the last 2 miles of the 10K, which was a good sign for possibly running longer races than the 10K. I'm still hoping I might be able to try a half marathon again in 2019.
